Long Time Com'n fished for billfish during the annual Virginia Beach tournament recently. We found the white and blue marlin as well as dolphin (mahi-mahi) on our first day out and came in under steel gray skies with a white marlin flag flying. This is a catch-and-release tournament for the billfish, but the mahi-mahi got cleaned and converted to fillets post haste! On the second day (we could only fish two days out of three), we came into Ruddee Inlet with a sailfish flag. Both fish were good size, and both anglers caught their first billfish during this tournament. The blue marlin that thrashed the baits and got away was a monster, and we were sorry to see him leave our wake. Next time! This is always a good tournament, with the best boats from Viginia and North Carolina participating. When our boat was in Hatteras years ago, we were docked at the same marine with this year's winnter--and he's a whale of a captain. It's always exciting to go to the deep and fish for the big boys. We'll be doing it some more this year, too, if anyone is interested--but we surely hope for some calmer waters. |
